A soft wind blew as Mirany settled onto a smooth log in a small clearing in the forest. As she looked at the trees surrounding the small patch of cleared land, she fingered her thin bladed katana. I wonder . . . She thought, If I'll ever have to use this . . . It was her father's weapon, and she took it with her when she fleed the village. Now it was her only memory of her old life, so she stood up and continued into the forest, determined to start on a new path.

Katsuko was walking through the forest when he saw someone walking ahead of him.

Mirany stopped when she heard a noise behind her. Stopping behind a tree, she strained her ears to catch any small noise, but it seemed the person had concealed their footsteps of stopped walking. Reaching for the hilt of her unused katana, she prepared to unsheath it if the situation required.

Katsuko saw the girl take out her katana. He thought for a moment and he felt stupid for leaving his zanbato at his house.

Still hiding behind a tree, she waited silently. After a while, when none of the two moved, she peeked out of behind the tree and saw a boy standing there. He didn't look very harmful, so she stepped out from behind her cover and stood parallel to him, waiting for either one of them to move, but still didn't let her guard down.

Katsuko looked at the girl and srarted to walk near her but he turned back around and started walking in the other direction, waiting to see if she would do anything.

Mirany waited, but when he turned around and starting walking away, she decided he wouldn't cause any harm. "Hey," she started, "wait . . . " She walked a few steps towards him and let go of the hilt of her katana.

Katsuko stopped and turned his head to face her. "Yeah?" Katsuko asked as he turned around to face her.

"Ummm . . . " she said, wondering why she had stopped him. She searched through her mind for something to say, until finally, she said the only thing that came to mind. "Do you know where the nearest village is?" she said, mentally slapping herself.

"Yes. Just keep walking straight and soon there will be a clearing. You'll see many houses and a few Inns. Want me too show you where it is?" Katsuko asked.

"Umm . . . " she said, not sure if she should go with this stranger. "Alright, I have a bad sense of direction, anyway . . . " she stated, deciding to trust her instinct on this.

"Okay. Just follow me." Katsuko started to walk forward but suddenly stopped and turned around. "Just one question. Who are you?"

"Katsuko. I'm Katsuko." Katsuko started to walk again hoping that Mirany was following him.

Following a little behind him, Mirany contemplated what her excuse would be for going to the village. I . . . need herbs for a sick family member? . . . No, that's too original. . . A message for the village elder? No, I don't have anything to deliver . . . As she thought up a storm of clever but not good enough excuses in her mind, she thought she heard a faint rustling noise behind a bush. Glancing back to see nothing, she decided it was just her imagination and continued walking, but still fingered the hilt of the katana she wore in her obi.
