As Katsuko left Mirany in her room, she looked around it. It was small, but cozy, perfect for her. Deciding that no danger would come, she unstrapped her sheathed katana from its place on her belt and placed it carefully under the small straw bed she was to sleep on. The bed had a small quilt on it, but that was all Mirany needed to keep her warm for a few nights. Her stomach growled once more as placed her leather pouch that she kept only the things she would need on a journey inside the first of two drawers of a small side table next to the bed. She exited the room and walked down the stairs and to the kitchen, eager to get a bite of food in her stomach.

As Mirany came down the stairs, Katsuko started pour some soup into two bowls. "It might be a little hot. Would you like some ice cubes for your soup?"

"No, I'll drink it hot," Mirany said, not really liking the way people used ice cubes to cool what was meant to be hot. As the sat at a table and took a sthingy of soup into her mouth, she was amazed. "Wow, this is wonderful!" she exclaimed after she swallowed.

Katsuko smiled. "I'm glad you like it!" Katsuko started to eat his soup but then stopped. He sensed something but did not know what it was. Then he started to eat again, pretending that there was nothing wrong.

Mirany noticed when Katsuko stopped in his eating, and then she stopped, too. She wondered if something was wrong, and then remembered what he had said about rumors earlier. She decided to question him about it. "Katsuko . . . " she started, "What did you mean when you said something about rumors earlier?"

Katsuko looked up at Mirany with a surprised look in his eyes. "What? Oh, that. Well, some people in the village supposedly saw a demon around about a year ago but the rumors are still going around. I really don't know why the rumors are still around. I haven't seen it."

"Oh," she said, "that's all?" As she finished the last of her stew, Mirany got up from her seat at the table and asked, "Where should I put the dishes?"

"You can put them in the sink if you want." Katsuko was surprised by her question. Such manners...Katsuko thought.

"Alright," Mirany said, walking over to the sink. "So . . ." she started, surprisingly bored, "what do you do around here all day?"

"I usually read or listen to music. Sometimes I swim in the lake behind the village or catch fish for food. Are you bored? I think I have some board games upstairs."

After thinking for a moment, Mirany said, "Could I go for a swim in the lake?"

"Yeah. Sure. I'll go too." Katsuko finished the last of his soup and put the bowl in the sink. "Do you have a bathing suit? If not, I'm sure there's a store around that sells them"

"These are the only clothes I have with me," she said, pointing to the ones she was wearing. And then she said, " . . . I don't have a lot of money, though . . ."

"I could help with that, and the stuff in this village is pretty cheap. Most of us don't have a lot of money, but I don't need it. I have everything I need. I have a job in another village. I was coming home from my job when I saw you." Katsuko looked up at the ceiling. "When do you want to go?"

After thinking for a moment, she said, "Could we go now?" Mirany hadn't taken a bath in a few days, and a swim could do her some good.
